Castles with kids — the climb-on ones, not the roped-off ones

How to pick a castle or historic site that works for children, and what to do when the history bit runs out of steam.

Castles & history

Children do not care about dates. They care about towers, spiral stairs, arrow slits and the possibility of a drawbridge. Pick for that and the history goes in sideways.

Ruins beat museums

A ruin lets a five-year-old walk into the middle of the story. Grass banks, half-standing walls and open gates are effectively a playground with a thousand years of backstory attached.

Questions worth asking before you go

  • Can they climb, or is everything behind rope?
  • Is there a grass area for when the walls stop being interesting?
  • How long is the walk from the car park?
  • Is there a trail sheet or quest for children?

Stretching the visit

Bring a costume, or a sword made of a stick. Give the youngest one a job — count the arrow slits, find the well, spot the garderobe. Twenty minutes of castle becomes ninety.
